One-to-one Pilates

“What is important is to reawaken your awareness of muscles and joints that are not used, used inadequately or misused so that you can extend your movement possibilities in both energy and expressiveness.” Irmgard Bartenieff

Why One-to-one Pilates?

Julie takes a person-centred approach to Pilates and movement education, specialising in remedial issues. She recognises that each client will experience their body uniquely and that understanding this is the key to maximising the therapeutic benefit of movement. Only one-to-one Pilates sessions allow for such an in-depth and bespoke way of working – it would simply be impossible in a group setting. Julie draws on her diverse background and knowledge to inform the approach taken with each client. The ultimate aim is for each client to develop a positive relationship with their body and feel empowered in managing any issues that arise. Private sessions are therefore highly beneficial for those suffering from stress, injury, pain or specific conditions such as chronic fatigue, arthritis, hypermobility, scoliosis, herniated/bulging disc etc.

One-to-one Pilates sessions are also ideal for those wanting to:

– improve their existing Pilates practice with some one-to-one guidance to apply in your mat classes,

– have an individual programme of Pilates designed just for you to do at home and monitored/adapted by a professional,

– to address a range of specific issues such as (but not limited to) osteoarthritis, hypermobility, injuries, post hip replacement, back pain or disc problems,

– or to support or compliment other ongoing therapies such as physiotherapy and osteopathy.

One-to-one Pilates sessions are tailored to you and your needs, wants and body.

“I found Julie’s approach to my individual physical needs respectful, sensitive and, above all,  effective.  Her explanations as she took me through the exercises enabled an on-going healing process.  The sustainable benefits of her interventions are felt each day. ” Susan S.

What to expect

One-to-one Pilates sessions in Edinburgh take place at Julie’s home studio in Liberton or online via Zoom. The first session will involve a postural assessment and have a short discussion about your needs and aims. We will then start with a few hand-picked exercises. Following sessions will build on this and may make use of a variety of small equipment such as resistance bands, blocks, small balls, weighted balls, swiss ball, Pilates ring etc.

Cleaning of the studio and equipment will occur before and after each session, and hand sanitiser should be used on arrival. Please arrive no earlier than 5 minutes before your session and if you would like to use your own mat or equipment you can bring those. Please arrive ready as there are no changing facilities.
